County solvency good, better

To the editor:

This letter is in reference to the half-page advertisement in last week’s Enterprise that presented the “exit letter” from Elizabeth Gray and audience comments at many Leelanau County Board of Commissioners’ meetings.

This letter and these comments state that the financial integrity or solvency of the County is currently “undermined” or not good. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have calculated four well-recognized measures of government financial solvency for the County’s general and special revenue funds combined using figures from their Annual Financial Reports from 2015 to 2024. I found that, relative to six other counties of the same size in northern Michigan, Leelanau County’s financial solvency is as good or better than all of them.
