To the editor:
For over a generation we have been told that government is the problem, but we still have one. At this point we may have to accept it, particularly as we prepare to celebrate its 250th birthday. Throughout many of those 250 years, we have also had political parties. As we celebrate, we may also have to accept that the problem is no longer the government but our political parties.
One immediate example of this problem is evident in the ongoing treatment of our County Administrator. We have been treated to one complaint after another like the flavor of the month. The attacks are consistently ferocious, but the problem changes just enough to keep it on the local front page. It reads like a serialized novel. If it was a TV show, it would be a soap opera with our current County Administrator cast as the latest villain. The star of a story of character assassination. Unfortunately, the members of one political party within our county spend all their time manufacturing complaints. All they offer is more of the same -- fire yet another administrator. Hardly a solution. I have attended County Commissioner meetings with regularity for the past few years, and all I can say to my fellow residents of Leelanau County is don’t believe everything you read in the paper about our administrator and neighbor Jim Dyer.
