‘Month of the Young Child’

To the editor:

April is both the month in Northern Michigan when our world comes back to life, and our Month of the Young Child. In celebrating this, we recognize not only the developmental needs of our youngest children, but also the skilled educators specializing in Early Childhood Education, the kitchen staff preparing healthy, tasty meals, and our community members who support Early Childhood Education by participating in fundraising, serving on boards and committees, and making donations.

The first 1,000 days of our children’s lives are critical for development. Through play and interactions with caring, skilled adults, children in our community learn to trust, share, negotiate, respect each other’s boundaries, be resilient, and self-regulate emotions. These are a few of the building blocks our children acquire in early childhood learning centers, laying the foundation for a successful life.
