We the People

To the editor: Webster’s Dictionary defines a patriot as a “person who vigorously supports his/her country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.” Our country is based on the principle of democracy and the rule of law, both now being threatened by people co-opting the phrase “We the People” while claiming to be patriots. They are entitled to their beliefs.

To the editor:

Webster’s Dictionary defines a patriot as a “person who vigorously supports his/her country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors.” Our country is based on the principle of democracy and the rule of law, both now being threatened by people co-opting the phrase “We the People” while claiming to be patriots. They are entitled to their beliefs. For me, patriotism includes building an economy that works for every American, not just those at the top. It means passing critical border security legislation as soon as possible, rather than delaying it for political gain. It includes universal healthcare and sensible gun laws. It protects the environment, a woman’s right to choose, free and fair elections, freedom to love whom you choose, freedom to read what you choose and religious freedom. A patriot should want to see our democratic republic preserved, not destroyed. Patriotism means supporting the peaceful transfer of power, not a violent and deadly insurrection. Moreover the term “patriot” does not and should not belong to one party or cause –– neither should the phrase “We the People,” which belongs to all Americans. The day after the 2016 election, my wife and I hung an American flag outside our front door. Our flag is still flying.
