The annual Scott Brow Kid’s Fishing Day held at the Mill Pond in Northport welcomed dozens of families — many of the attendees being youth — on Saturday morning.
Ryan Blessing, Northport Sportsman Club member, said the club planted about 350 rainbow trout the day before the event with the help of kindergartners from Northport Public School. Although temperatures were somewhat chilly, some families were up before the crack of dawn on Saturday morning eager to get out fishing. Blessing said the beloved fishing derby has been ongoing since the club first held the event in the 1980s and continues to this day because of the interest from local families and the tradition it holds in their lives. The event has also been a way to get youth involved in outdoor sports over the years.
“It’s great to see families and it’s definitely a generational thing,” Blessing said. “There’s people bringing their kids and grandkids here that are in some of these pictures from the old derbies, so it’s really cool to see all the people reconnect and it’s just special.”
