Leelanau Township continued its review of a new airport ordinance at its regular meeting held Tuesday.
The township had its first reading of the ordinance last month and continued the lengthy discussion of possible edits while considering feedback during the meeting. Barb Conley, Leelanau Township supervisor, said she’s been in communication with longtime airport manager Tom Wetherbee throughout the process about ways to have temporary campgrounds, as well as having approval of events by the board. Conley said during discussion that other changes made so far are very minor.
The formation of the airport ordinance came about, Conley explained, because the current parks’ ordinance did not cover what it needed to and the airport manager was in favor of keeping it out of parks and treating it as an airport. Although it’s not an ordinance addressed by parks, Conley said that it doesn’t mean it can’t have park functions.
