Don’t count your chickens before they hatch may be wise advice if you’re a farmer but oh my, if you are a democratic political consultant or party official, there was a whole bunch of premature chicken counting last Wednesday morning when the whole nation’s eyes were on the special election results in the Thumb region of the state.
Since you don’t live there, you may have missed it, but the boys and girls at the New York Times and other major media outlets certainly did not.
They were hot on the story that a Democrat won a vacant Michigan state senate seat with 59% of the vote while the Republican mustered only 39%. All this came in a district that included Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties, all once solid Democratic territory years ago, but President Donald Trump was victorious there last time out. So the hook on the story that most of the main stream media adopted was along these lines: Democrats won an election on Tuesday handing the Republicans another loss in a district that went for Mr. Trump thus raising speculation that Mr. Trump’s low ratings could portend bad news for the R’s in the fall election.
