Resignation… a ‘clarion call’

To the editor:

Last week’s story regarding Empire Trustee Ella Skrocki’s resignation from the Empire Village Council, because she cannot find housing and live in the village that she was elected to serve, should be clarion call to the Village, Empire Township and Leelanau County.

Our region is facing a crisis, the lack of attainable workforce housing, caused by many factors including second-home ownership and short-term rental investments. Missing from the story are the solutions to this problem that the Leelanau Peninsula Economic Foundation Housing Collaborative and its members are proposing. These solutions merely need community support, emphasis in Master plans and planning and zoning board modifications to implement.
