The battle over how to regulate short term rentals (STR’S) is heating up not just in Leelanau County this week but also in Lansing where state legislators are debating bills that would strip the ability of local municipal governments to regulate STR’s. On Wednesday morning this week, May 26, Leelanau County’s State Sen. Curt Vanderwall was in a Senate Regulatory Reform Committee meeting where legislators were discussing Senate Bill 446. As currently drafted, the bill would effectively remove regulatory authority over STR’s from townships, villages, cities and counties.
*** Some of the traditional events that make Memorial Day in Leelanau County are falling by the wayside this year due to COVID restrictions, which as recently as Monday, were loosened further by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. But others are still a go. The public is welcome at 9 a.m. Monday to the Veterans Memorial Plaza at the county government center for the annual Memorial Day observance.
