Tribal officials and members gathered last week to honor the lives of 139 Native American men of Company K, the 1st Michigan Sharpshooters — the first time in more than 160 years.
A portion of M-22, north of Suttons Bay, has been designated a Civil War Memorial Highway, honoring these men who took up arms in the American Civil War. They did so even though they were not eligible for citizenship until 1924.
It is believed to be the only memorial highway in the nation dedicated to Native American Civil War veterans.
