The Village of Empire Planning Commission moved forward Tuesday night with a zoning ordinance addressing short term rentals (STRs) while delaying the decision on whether or not to establish a cap on the number of rentals in the village.
The ordinance in question provided an amendment to Section 2.02 of the zoning ordinance that updates the definition of dwelling units and explicitly incorporates STRs into zoning language.
“You are simply amending the relevant ordinances to clarify that short term rentals are permitted uses and requiring owners of the properties operating short term rentals to register them with the village,” planning commission chair Bob Chase said, reading from a statement from their attorney who called the ordinance “fairly non-controversial.”
