The Lake Leelanau Lake Association (LLLA)has been awarded an Implementation Grant of $6,879 from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
The funding, provided through the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) Program, will launch a dedicated two-year initiative to monitor the stream habitat and water quality at six stream sampling locations in the Lake Leelanau watershed. Target streams include Beaudwin Creek, Cedar Run Creek, Houdek Creek, Mebert Creek, Skeba Creek, and Victoria Creek.
The LLLA is one of only three organizations in the state to receive an implementation grant this year, and the only lake association. This funding transitions the association from the planning phase into active fieldwork, allowing volunteers to conduct benthic macroinvertebrate surveys — studying “water bugs” that serve as indicators of water health — and perform habitat assessments.
