Northport school approves 2026-27 budget

The Northport Board of Education (BOE) approved the school’s proposed general fund 2026-27 budget totaling $6,864,205 at its regular meeting on June 8. The new budget will go into effect July 1.

Local revenues for Northport’s budget is projected at $5,734,197, with the majority of those funds, approximately $816,396, being from state revenues, and federal revenues totaling $223,855.

State revenues have decreased since the 2025-26 original general fund budget — State revenues for the 2025-26 year was $869,026, about $52,630 more than the 2026-27 proposed budget state revenue. Federal revenues were previously $164,471 in the 202526 fiscal year and have increased by about $59,384 for the coming year.

The total expenditures projected for the 2026-27 budget year is $6,864,205, an increase of $232,205 from the district’s 202526 final general fund budget of $6,632,000.

Other supporting services expenditures include: pupil support services, projected at $429,055, increases by $103,449 from the previous budget year; school admin support services increased by $15,202 to $201,632; business support services increased by $5,222 to $159,456; and plant operation and maintenance increased by $31,703 to $722,521. Total supporting services are projected at $2,619,628, an increase of $40,217 from the 2025-26 budget year’s estimate of $2,579,411.

The district’s unassigned fund balance is $4,297,552, an increase of $249,406 from the 2025-26 original budget of $4,048,146.

The 2026-2027 projected budget is based on 13.3880 mills of ad valorem property taxes to be levied on the taxable value of non-homestead and non-qualified agricultural property. All millage in the projected budget is levied for the purpose of the meeting general fund operating expenses.

Northport Superintendent Neil Wetherbee could not be reached for comment in time of publication.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the resignations of Heidi Babcock and Denise Plamondon.

• Approved the hiring of Karson Christianson as custodian.

• Approved the Indian Policies and Procedures for 2026-27.
