The following is an excerpt from “The History of Leelanau Township” by The Leelanau Township Historical Writers Group.

In the early 1900s the Leelanau Township Board as a ruling body became more active. Caucus meetings were held to nominate persons to the board. Elections were held during the month of June. One of the first concerns of the board was to establish a township library.

Prominent names for faithful service on the board during the first 20 years of the turn of the century were as follows: J.F. Mathews, supervisor; Antoine Bartlett, trustee also called “justice”; D.H. Scott, trustee or justice; C.I. Wrisley, treasurer; Charles H. John, clerk.
