Over two dozen women attended the June meeting and program of the Omena Women’s Club (OWC) this past Wednesday. The program was lunch at Local’s in Lake Leelanau, followed by a tour of the printing process at the Leelanau Enterprise. Local’s did a wonderful job of accommodating the group, and everyone loved their lunch. Many thanks to owner Tony West, manager Elaine Steffens, and server extraordinaire Ashley Simpson.
Ken Lorincz, manager of Enterprise Printing, gave a fascinating, and fun, tour of the Enterprise’s printing operation, and the group got to see the presses running with the first section of last week’s paper. Ken included a tour of the whole facility, and a little history. The Leelanau Enterprise’s story began in 1877 in Northport, so it has deep ties to Leelanau Township. It subsequently moved to Leland, and after Alan and Debra Campbell took over the ownership, they moved it to its current location in Lake Leelanau.
The print room was also quite a Leelanau Township “reunion.”Omena resident Jeff Lingaur has been the press operator there for over 20 years. His wife Sheila works there part-time. Jerry Knudsen, who many of the tour members remembered from his time as the manager of Tom’s in Northport, helps out on Wednesdays. Ray Mulliner completes the printing organization. He also has decades of experience in printing.
