To the editor:
We have seen rain locally and statewide flooding events. This is slowly resolving itself as water drains into the Great Lakes. It is readily apparent that ground saturated with water has no ready path to Lake Michigan.
In Suttons Bay we have three impediments to water draining to the Lake. County Rd 633, the railroad corridor that is now TART Trail and M-22 act as dikes. Because of this we rely on 8 culverts to pass the water to the Lake. \\These culverts date back to when the roads were constructed. They appear inadequate, show their age, can’t be repaired and thus imperil the roads. Culvert replacement is very expensive so they are deferred. This is an issue that needs to be on the table with the Suttons Bay Town Council, Suttons Bay Township Board, Leelanau County Road Commission and Michigan Department of Transportation.
