Historical Society observes 250 years

As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Leelanau Historical Society invites residents and visitors to celebrate this historic milestone through a new museum exhibit, free Independence Day admission, and a full schedule of July programs that connect Leelanau County’s story to the larger American experience.

The national Semiquincentennial marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and offers an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s founding while exploring the local histories that give it meaning. Like the Bicentennial celebrations of 1976, America 250 encourages communities across the country to celebrate their heritage, engage in civic dialogue, and consider their role in shaping the future.

At the Leelanau Historical Society, this milestone is rooted in a simple idea: local history is the foundation of national history. The people, places, and events that shaped Leelanau County are part of the broader American story, demonstrating how national events have been experienced, interpreted, and shaped at the local level.
