For more than 70 years the VFW Post 7731 hall has welcomed everything from wedding receptions and high school dances to Veterans Day ceremonies. Now, a major renovation entering its second phase aims to preserve the building for generations to come while making it accessible to everyone who walks through its doors.
“We want to serve our veterans and we want to serve the community with community service,” post chaplain and Vietnam veteran Jim Simons said. “But the building just wasn’t supporting our efforts.”
For Simons and other members of the post, the need for renovations became impossible to ignore about three years ago when 104 year old D-Day veteran Dick Grout had to be carried up the stairs.
