The village of Omena is decorated to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary thanks to the efforts and donations from the Omena Women’s Club, Omena Club 21, Omena Village Preservation Association, Leelanau Wine Cellars, and to members of the Omena community!
Share the spirit of the day at 10 a.m. on the Fourth for the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Rink Smith in front of the Omena Post Office.
The June meeting of one Omena book club is always a poetry reading, where each member brings a poem. Cathy Heiser introduced hers as written in 1893 by Katharine Lee Bates and originally titled “Pike’s Peak.” Bates, an English professor at Wellesley College, had taken a train trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach at Colorado College. Several of the sights on her trip inspired her, including the majestic view of the Great Plains from high atop Pike’s Peak.
