Crystal River portages have new look

Paddlers returning to the Crystal River this summer will notice one of the biggest changes in years.

Two former portages have been replaced by bridges, creating a smoother float along one of Leelanau County’s most popular kayaking routes.

The improvements have transformed portions of the trip, including the stretch once known for “shooting the tube,” where kayakers and canoers passed through a narrow culvert beneath County Road 675. While that iconic feature has been gone since 2024, Crystal River Outfitters co-owner Katy Wiesen said paddlers have quickly embraced the new bridge that has finally replaced it.
