Rantz Memorial Plein Air, writer series

Omena seasonal resident, Dennis Turner, will be the featured author on Tuesday, July 21, at the Friends of the Library Summer Writers Series at the Willowbrook Mill at 7 p.m. His career has included lawyer and law professor at the University of Dayton. He is now an author of note. His latest book, “An American Yankee in King Alfred’s Court,” is a work of literary nonfiction, drawing from his two sabbaticals in England. Goodreads described it as “smart, humane, and quietly funny,” adding that it “will appeal to readers of memoir, literary nonfiction, and reflective travel writing.”

Dennis shared with the Omena News column that he received an email from an Associate Justice of the Palau Supreme Court praising the book and asking if he might be interested in a visiting professor position at the Kazakhstan School of Law where he had served as dean. As an added inducement, he mentioned that the law school had a Starbucks.

The 13th annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the morning of July 4 drew a record crowd of over 120 people. Rink Smith, who organizes the reading at every Post Office in Leelanau County, was again the reader in Omena. It is a very meaningful way to start the day.
