Who is Blowing Smoke?

To the editor:

For days, Leelanau County residents have been breathing unhealthy air from Canadian wildfires. Many Republican leaders have been quick to blame Canada, but strangely silent about the role our own government plays in worsening the conditions that make these disasters more frequent and severe.

You cannot cut climate research, weaken clean energy programs, reduce environmental protections, and then pretend the smoke drifting across our border is someone else’s problem. Wildfires may ignite in Canada, but climate change does not recognize national boundaries.
