I was glad to see last week Rep. Bergman’s interest in minimizing the effect of wildfire smoke from Canada on Michiganders. But of course, he is missing the point.
Accelerating climate change, largely from the burning of fossil fuels, makes wildfires bigger, hotter and more destructive. Canada is warming twice as fast as the global average. Canada is home to more than a quarter of the world‘s boreal forests. Given the extent and remoteness of Canada‘s forests, it would take enormous resources to mitigate wildfires, if the pace of climate change persists or increases.
