Historical Society welcomes author

The Leelanau Historical Society invites the community to an evening with Susan Wasserman, author of the 2026 Michigan Notable Book “Stepping Off the Boat: Stories from North Manitou Island,” on Wednesday, August 12, at 6 p.m. in the Munnecke Community Room, 203 E. Cedar St., Leland.

Recently recognized by the Library of Michigan as one of the year’s most distinguished books about the state, “Stepping Off the Boat” brings the history of North Manitou Island to life through meticulous research and compelling personal stories. During the program, Wasserman will discuss the inspiration behind the book, her research process, and the island’s rich cultural history, followed by a questionand- answer session.

The Leelanau Historical Society proudly supported the project through its Leelanau Press Research Fellowship, which encourages original scholarship exploring the history of the Leelanau Peninsula.
