A settlement that preserves public access to Lake Michigan at the end of Reynolds Street has been reached. The Leland Township Board voted 4-1 during a special meeting Aug. 6 to approve a settlement agreement that ends the long standing lawsuit filed by adjacent property owners challenging the ownership of the public road end. *** Construction site trailers are now in place on the Sugar Loaf Resort property in Cleveland Township and demolition of the derelict ski resort is expected to get underway soon, according to township Supervisor Tim Stein.

Consideration is being given to declaring the entire Leelanau County Government Center as a “courthouse” so judges can designate all three stories of the building as a “weapons-free” zone. That was the message from Probate Court Judge Larry Nelson, who appeared before the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday morning for the second time in as many months to express his concerns about courthouse security. *** County commissioners are catching flack from other local officials whose governments are reluctant to reimburse county coffers for unpaid property taxes owed by former developers of the BayView condos in Suttons Bay. One allegation suggests that Leelanau County appears to be paying for a $1.3 million repair of its Law Enforcement Center on the backs of children attending Suttons Bay Public Schools.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians announced last week that the Tribal fishing tug Joseph H. and its trap net equipment will be sold — likely for a fraction for what the state paid for the operation one year ago. *** The “dog days” of summer are upon us, with relief finally in sight. Heat indexes have approached or exceeded 100 degrees for eight of the past 10 days making it tough to do much of anything without breaking a sweat.

At its regular August session Tuesday, the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted to begin a search for a site for a senior citizen center. Working with the Commission on Aging and related agencies, the board will seek a centralized location in the county for a building “Not to exceed $40,000” in price. *** Bids will bo taken Wednesday in Lansing for a truck climblane on the north side of M-72 between M-22 and the crest of Morgan Hill in Leelanau County’s Elmwood Township. Also included in the project are intersection improvements at M-72 and Co. Rd. 669 in Kasson Township.

Harford Field, Committee chairman, reported to members of the Glen Lake Association in annual meeting Saturday night that $1,355,50 has been collected so far towards fire protection for the Glen Lake area, $370 is pledged, and nearly $500 more expected.
*** John Ingwersen of Traverse City, cutting timber on South Fox Island under the name Manitou Logging Company, has bought land at Good Harbor and plans to build a large mill there, probably next spring. Mr. Ingwersen Wednesday night failed in his first attempt to tow logs from South Fox to the mainland.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Norconk, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Norconk and son Elden, all of Empire, visited last Sunday with Leland friends. *** Mr. and Mrs. George Fritz and nephew Louis Tonn of Chicago arrived Monday by automobile for two weeks visit with Mrs. Fritz’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Peters.
