The Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department stated "The investigation showed no indication of foul play that was associated with Samson's death. Furthermore, there were no indications to suggest the public was ever at risk," a press release stated.
Human remains discovered in a wooded area on Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) reservation property in Peshawbestown last Saturday afternoon have been identified.
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa confirmed mid-day Wednesday the remains were found to be of Samson Raphael, a tribal member, who had been missing since the end of May.
“It has been confirmed, Samson is on his journey on the spirit path, “ his mother Mari Lee Raphael wrote on social media. “My heart is shattered.”
Family members, community volunteers, and the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department had been searching for Samson “Sammy” Raphael, missing since May 29 or May 30, The GTB Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Michigan State Police, the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, and GTB Fire Department responded Saturday to a report of a deceased person discovered in a wooded area on the Reservation.
“The remains of our missing relative, Samson Raphael, have been found; he has walked on, and is now home with his ancestors,” GTB Chairwoman, Sandra L. Witherspoon said, in a press release. “ As a lifelong resident of our reservation, he was deeply woven into the fabric of our community.”
The GTB community is rallying beyond his family.
“Our collective condolences, prayers, and heartfelt sympathies go out to Samson’s family during this time of unimaginable grief,” Witherspoon said. “Your entire tribal family surrounds you with love, praters and unwavering support.
“We gently urge all tribal members to keep our departed relative and his family in your daily prayers,” the GTB chairwoman said.
She also asked the community to offer tobacco (semaa) in a sacred way to honor and lift the family in spirit.”
