The Leland Township Board voted 4-1 to pay for repair and paint costs of the Grove Park tennis court in Lake Leelanau at its regular meeting on August 10.
Bids with two companies were approved and included a proposal from Ron Brown & Sons Inc. Asphalt Paving for $31,816 to remove and dispose of the existing asphalt at Grove Park and to pave with new asphalt.
The second bid was with Hentco LLC, a tennis court specialist, for painting and striping of the new construction for a total of $13,012. The proposal includes: power cleaning the court; sand/mill the court to remove all loose material and minor repairs as needed; resurface the court with SportMaster coatings, color; and to stripe the court with line paint. The total cost for both bids to complete the repairs and painting will cost $44,828, and falls within the $50,000 budgeted by the township for the project. The removal of a tree also in the vicinity was estimated to cost an additional The action followed a lengthy discussion regarding the cost of the repairs for an aging tennis court area that numerous board members argued has been neglected for years. Leland Township Supervisor Clint Mitchell said at the meeting that Grove Park has been discussed for quite some time and has been budgeted for this year, noting that he’s heard from people that have said it could be something else and others that want it to stay as a tennis court.
