Construction will begin at the end of the month on Alpine and White bridges in Solon Township.
The work was scheduled initially scheduled to start in in July but were postponed due to sourcing of bridge components.
“Working to figure out a schedule at the end of August, first part of September,” Leelanau County Road Commission engineer Craig Brown said.
A cooperative agreement between the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) and the Leelanau County Road Commission (LCRC) for funding the projects has been reached, with a total of $1.569 million expected for infrastructure costs.
The CRA agreed with the LCRC to provide funding to complete the construction planned since late 2024.
Meanwhile, the wait is almost over, as road construction is coming through Maple City in Kasson Township and is slated for after Labor Day.
Elmers will be leading the bumpy-to-smooth project on S. Maple City Road, with a 42-day deadline and a cost of $719,662, including in front of the post office, Peg Town, and the Short Stop gas station.
Kasson Township will fund 100% of the cost to pave a portion of Valley Road east of Maple City Road.
Molon was the low bidder; Kasson Township signed an agreement with the road commission.
In other road commission business Manager Brendan Mullane said crews have been dodging washouts and tree damage from storms, while chipseal and road projects continue at full speed.
“The northern (chip seal) projects have moved on to Dufek Road and will end with projects on Stony Point. Dufek Road was added to this year after Leland Township retracted its request to chip seal Grand Avenue,” Brendan Mullane said in his staff notes. “Delivery of the new culvert pipe for the washed-out portion of Gills Pier Road has been delivered, and installation is to take place ASAP. Cherry Capital Communications has already completed its relocation onsite.”
A discussion of culverts dominated the Little Traverse Lake Annual meeting.
“I appreciate the township and lake association for taking ownership of the culverts,” he said.
In other news, Rosinski Road in Solon Township has work on the west and east sides.
“Some of the issues on Rosinski have been addressed, but it appears some work done on the west side of the road by a resident who lives on the east side has contributed to a major washout and damaged some of the pavement. We are still looking into what can be done. We may still need to add this road to the shoulder-peeling list at some point,” Mullane said.
Leland’s Streetscape Planning Committee is slated to roll out its recommendations to the Township sometime in August.
The engineering firm (KPM) has finished the geotechnical fieldwork. It is now moving into the environmental and historicpreservation clearance paperwork required before the 2027 design phase can proceed on County Road 641.
