A small pack of cyclists will roll out into Leelanau County for a race unlike anything else on the region’s crowded summer calendar — one with no finish-line crowds, no course marshals, and, for many riders, at least one stretch of pedaling through the middle of the night on nothing but their own grit as the Munga comes to town Sept. 12-13 The Munga, originally an endurance race that started in South Africa, has added a Michigan edition that has quietly become one of the more distinctive endurance events in the area.
“Our events are a little unique in that they’re super long. The 24-hour is actually the shortest format we offer,” Race Director Alex Harris said.
The Munga’s flagship race back in South Africa is a 700-mile nonstop ride. Organizers knew better than to lead with that in the United States.
