As the Leelanau School prepares to welcome students back next week, Head of School Rob Hansen says the small boarding school community is once again ready to do what it does best — help teenagers feel seen.
“You have to quickly validate that they’re going to be seen and heard and kept safe, but you also have to challenge them,” Hansen said. “They’re going to see that people around them are supporting them through those things.”
Seniors arrive on campus Tuesday and head almost immediately into the traditional three-day camping trip, with the underclassmen following the next day on their own orientation trips before classes start the following Monday. While the trip usually takes students out to the Manitou Islands, this year the seniors will head off to Fisherman’s Island near Petoskey and the underclassmen will stay closer to home on the peninsula.
