With the fall season and cooler temperatures just around the corner, fresh local apples of all varieties are being harvested and are available at local farmstands and markets in Leelanau County.
Apple harvest typically starts in mid-August and goes until the end of fall. This year’s predicted apple harvest dates from the Michigan State University (MSU) Extension note that most varieties will have slightly early to normal harvest dates, but depending on temperature changes, that prediction could be slightly adjusted.
Despite a cold spring with multiple freeze events observed earlier this year, the crop load is looking good for most locations though. MSU Extension reported that regional differences in predicted peak harvest dates across Michigan are very evident this year, and there is clear separation for varieties by region.
