Joel Heyboer of Leelanau Classics, known for wooden boat restoration, displays several client projects at the Maritime Festival in Leland Saturday.
“My favorite part is varnishing. I love doing the varnish work and then seeing the final product when I'm done. That's what it's all about for me,” Heyboer said.
Family-friendly celebration brings Great Lakes music, classic boats, vintage cars and local history to Leland’s waterfront every year.
The 21st Annual Jim Wenstrup Wooden Boat Show, featuring a beautiful fleet of classic wooden boats was named in memory of Jim Wenstrup, who coordinated the event for the past decade. Wenstrup’s passion for wooden boats, love of Lake Leelanau and welcoming spirit helped shape the gathering into the beloved community tradition it is today.
The Leelanau Classic Car Show was a hit, hosted by Van’s Garage in a special return, this filling the Leland Cultural District with vintage style.
Great Lakes musician Lee Murdock played soft tunes for the show.
The 2026 festival is part of the America 250 celebration, offering an opportunity to reflect on the people, waterways and working traditions that have shaped Leelanau County and the Great Lakes region.
The Leelanau Historical Society gratefully recognizes the festival sponsors whose generosity supports the festival’s music, programming, and free admissions.
