Leland defeated Glen Lake 3-0 as the Comets won their first Northwest Conference game of the season Monday.
“I told them they were hopping today. They were playing really quick—One-two touch passing, moving off the ball really well, communicating well. Another shutout, so defensively, I thought we were pretty solid. Up until the end there,” Leland coach Rob Sirrine said.
The Comets scored two first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime off the boots of Leland sophomore Ryan Connor and junior Cooper Burda.
Leland junior Liam Sweeney added a goal with two minutes remaining to win 3-0.
Glen Lake played well in the second half and nearly broke up the Comets shutout.
Leland junior goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez Mosqueda Jr. earned the shutout with three saves as the Comet defense only allowed a handful of opportunities all game.
“Defensively, we were all pretty organized, and it was a really fun game to watch. Offensively, we were doing an amazing job getting chance after chance after chance. We gotta work on finishing,” Hernandez said.
The Comets get above .500 (4-3-2) after a gauntlet start of the season. Leland travels to Buckley Wednesday, then welcomes Marquette for a Homecoming showdown noon Saturday, Sept. 19.
“We can't think too far ahead on who we play or who we lost to. We take this game and we go. We learn off of it. We fix our mistakes, and then hopefully just be ready for the playoffs,” Hernandez said.
Glen Lake drops its first NWC game of the season and travels to Traverse City Christian Saturday at 10 a.m
