Children visit Poor House ‘inmates’

This continues a series adapted from the book, “A Sleeping Bear Collection,” Volume 2 of the two-part set, “Oral History, Photographs, and Maps from the Sleeping Bear Region,” produced by Tom Van Zoeren in partnership with Sleeping Bear Forever. Here we continue with a selection written by Nan Helm, introduced in previous columns:

It was spring, and school was out. The Burdickville youngsters were happy in the thought of spring days and the long summer ahead. It was not that we didn’t love school — it was just that we loved vacation more.

This morning the Helm children had been allowed to go barefoot. Our beloved grandmother Sarah Campbell, who lived with us, always decided when that time had come. If we could bring her a dandelion blossom and she could hold it under our chin and produce a yellow shadow, we could take our shoes and stockings off for the summer (excepting Sundays, of course).
