Tensions came to a head on Monday as dozens of community members, many of whom were parents, school staff, and former students, filled the Northport Public School’s small gym for a Board of Education (BOE) meeting, citing numerous concerns about the district administration’s handling of issues and transparency.
The board meeting, which lasted over two hours, included emotional remarks from speakers during the first and second public comment periods.
The majority of those who spoke discussed their own negative experiences with the school administration, specifically with Superintendent Neil Wetherbee and his response to their varying concerns, dating back to when he was first appointed to the position in 2016. Conversely, many staff members and community members spoke highly of and in support of the board and Wetherbee, offering a complex view into the depth of care and concern felt on both sides for the district and its operations.
