Northport Public School students put their carefully designed water vessels to the test on Friday afternoon, racing boats made of cardboard at South Beach near the G. Marsten Dame Marina.

The cardboard boats were modeled after aquatic creatures — both real, imaginary, and mythical — and were held together largely with duct tape. From designs depicting sharks and Nemo the clownfish, to piranhas and the legendary kraken, a giant sea monster from Scandinavian folklore, the unique creature formations were on display for all to see and cheer on.

The winning team of the cardboard boat float built a hippo boat; the designers were 12th graders Jay Craker and Carson Kiessel. Second place, team shark, went to Olive Craker and Kenzie Scott; and third place, team jelly fish, went to Xyric Camino, Kayden Raphael, and Avery Kelley.
