Domestic dispute results in Northport shooting

Domestic dispute results in Northport shooting

An argument between a father and son Tuesday in Northport ended with one of the men shot.

About 2:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to North Purkiss Road, after multiple 911 calls that someone had been shot with a handgun.

Purkiss Road is located in the northern tip of Leelanau Township, just north of the Village of Northport.

Deputies arrived on the scene and quickly determined that a shooting did in fact take place and involved a father and son.

A verbal argument between the parties turned physical and a firearm was eventually brought into the situation.

The father, a 77-year-old from Northport, was subsequently arrested and lodged at the Leelanau County Jail on felony charges.

The victim, a 48-year-old male, also from Northport, was transported to Munson Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

During the course of the investigation a firearm was recovered.

A report from the incident has been forwarded to the Leelanau County Prosecutor for review.

The incident was isolated and there is no ongoing threat or danger to the public.

The event marks the first time in Sheriff Mike Borkovich’s tenure that a person-on-person shooting has been reported since his tenure started in 2013. Prior to this, there was a violent stabbing death just south of M-22 on French Road .

“I wish people who disagree would go back to getting into a fist fight or yelling at each other or something else,” Borkovich said.

“I wish people had a better way to vent … People go from 0-100 so fast over disagreements ... It’s important to keep people calm and have a third party,” Borkovich said.
