Yet another battle in a bloody 529-year-old culture war was fought this week at a meeting of the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners — complete with allusions to genocide, child sacrifice, religious and racial intolerance, and worse. Two “late items” added to the agenda of this week’s county board meeting pitted an acknowledgment of Leelanau County’s indigenous Native American heritage against an effort to recognize the positive contributions of Christopher Columbus to human history. *** The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners next week is expected to take action that might facilitate expansion and improvement of high-speed broadband internet and cellular phone service throughout the county. The board met as a committee- of-the-whole for more than two hours on Sept. 23 to review a 57-page “Rural Broadband Inventory Survey” focused on Leelanau County, prepared by consultant Chris Scherrer.
