Knizacky on his way to Leelanau for finance director

Knizacky on his way to Leelanau

After Risbridger’s abrupt resignation, Leelanau County interim administrator Lauren Cypher has been working nonstop to fill the role and solicited interim drain commissioner Chet Janik’s help in the meantime.

By Tuesday’s meeting, they had a name: Fabian Knizacky, who is the former administrator controller for Mason County.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to help out a fellow county in the interim position ... We will be doing important work and I will help them finalize the 2027 budget, and getting ready for the 2026 audit and the strategic plan. (Leelanau County) is also looking at a new computer system, which is an extensive project,” Knizacky said. “(First things first) sitting down with the board of commissioners and staff to find out what are the important issues in the county and where I can help fulfill the needs of the residents of Leelanau County.”

The board will vote on this at Tuesday’s regular meeting, and no dissent was heard during the executive session.

Janik dusted off the Rolodex over the weekend and came across Knizacky, whom he’s known for 15 years, and even interviewed him during the most recent Leelanau County Administrator search.

Janik also interviewed Knizacky for roles in Mason and Ogamaw County, to name a few, where Knizacky has served.

“(Knizacky) is well respected and very straightforward... He’s up to the challenge,” Janik said.

Knizacky retired as Mason County Administrator in early 2025 after a three-decade career.
