Area residents and visitors who attended last Saturday night’s Windborne Concert at the Northport Performing Arts Center (NPAC) received a real treat. The music was beautiful, uplifting, and creative. The performance was fun, and moving, and full of personal insights from the vocalists that enriched the experience. The Windborne members held a workshop with the Northport Village Voices earlier in the day, and the Northport group joined them on-stage for two numbers.
Village Voices member, Joe Thatcher, described it as a “transcendent” experience. They all sat in a circle, rather than lined up traditionally as a choir. The Windborne members asked them not to concentrate so much on singing with precision but rather with feeling, and Joe said that it really worked. Choir members were visibly moved, not just for the words they were singing, but also for the beauty of the harmony they produced as a result.
Other choir members said that the two-hour workshop took the two songs they were rehearsing and transformed words on a page into heartfelt music. The Village Voices felt incredibly fortunate to have had that experience. I would add that the Village Voices definitely demonstrated what amazing local talent we have with their performance of two challenging vocal arrangements with only two hours of rehearsal. The Village Voices welcomes anyone with a passion for singing. You can contact Laura Kalchik at (231) 499 –1454.
