Glen Lake hosted a team district last Thursday against Frankfort and Benzie.
The Lakers had to dig deep to defeat the Panthers 40-24 to face the Huskies in the district final.
Dean McKellar started the Lakers scoring against the Panthers with a quick pin, that was followed by a 14-second pin from Boden Fisher, to give Glen Lake a 28-6 lead. The Panthers would crawl back into the match, but Max Galla had another idea, icing Frankfort district championship hopes.
“Our team rose to the occasion today,” Glen Lake wrestling coach Luke Moeggenberg said. “You look at the sport of wrestling or any sport you want to peak at the right times. I feel like we’ve wrestled our best wrestling tonight ... wins and losses really aren’t, you know, our key component. It’s improvement. I feel like tonight we, um, we’re very blessed with having our first win at home.”
The Lakers goal was to get to the finals after losing to Frankfort earlier in the season in a close match.
Glen Lake lost in the district championship match against Benzie Central 69-12. The Huskies clinched back-to-back district titles with the win.
Glen Lake took an early lead with Abraham Feeney winning at 132 pounds. After that, it was all Benzie, as the Huskies won the next nine weight classes, four of them were by void.
Several Laker boy wrestlers’ season came to an end Saturday as nobody advanced to the regional championships during the individual regional tournament at Manton.
Galla, Feenery, Caden Sheehan, and Boden Fisher all fell in the semifinals match to end the season.
