Excellence in the classroom and on the court is commonplace for Leland senior Mallory Lowe.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has selected 10 student-athletes from Class C and D member schools to receive scholarships through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program.
“We have learned valuable lessons including teamwork, effort, grace, dignity and fair play that will leave a lasting impression on our character, guiding us not only in athletics but also in life. This powerful connection reminds us that how we play and how we treat our fellow athletes matters so much more than the final score,” Lowe said in a scholarship essay.
Lowe is one of four girls in class D to receive this recognition from MHSAA.
No one from anywhere in the surrounding area received this recognition.
Farm Bureau Insurance, in its 35th year of sponsoring the award, will give $2,000 college scholarships to 32 individuals who represent their member schools in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament, according to ‘2024 Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients’ by Geoff Kimmerly of MHSAA.com.
Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.
T he 32 scholarship recipients will be recognized March 16 during the MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.
The Class D Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are Mallory Lowe, Leland; Alivia Salenbien, Britton Deerfield; Ridley Fast, Hillsdale Academy; and Ben McCaw, Lawrence.
Lowe played three seasons of varsity volleyball, is playing her third of varsity basketball and will play her fourth of varsity soccer this spring. She led the Comets to a Division 4 runnerup finish in volleyball this past fall, making the all-state third team and earning all-state academic recognition. She earned all-conference honorable mention in basketball and helped soccer team to Northwest Conference co-championship in 2023. Lowe has been a part of the academic all-state basketball teams the last two seasons. Lowe has served as captain of all three teams as a senior. She earned AP Scholar recognition and completed International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
Lowe carries a 3.99 gradepoint average and is participating in her third year of National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, including as president of school’s NAHS. She also participates in student council and Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council, with leadership positions in both. Lowe has volunteered as a volleyball and basketball coach throughout high school. She will be attending the University of Michigan but is undecided on her field of study.
Comets defeat Buckley
On Wednesday, February 7 Leland (9-6) defeated Buckley and 39-33.
“We played a great game from start to finish against Buckley especially considering that we were short handed with missing a couple of players. We had a lot of different players step up though in this game and I was really proud of their effort and execution on both sides of the court,” Leland coach Ryan Knudsen said. “We did a good job overall of handling their defensive pressure and taking care of the basketball which combined with our improved defensive rotations helped us pull away from Buckley during the third quarter of the game.”
Stats: Elli Miller 16 Points, 6 Rebounds, 4 Assists; Lorna Wisen 8 Points, 4 Rebounds; Addi Waskiewicz 7 Points, 5 Steals, 4 Rebounds; Ella Knudsen 6 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists
