People traveling to and from Traverse City: listen up.
Work will resume Monday on the Michigan Department of Transportation $24.7 million project to rebuild 2.2 miles of US-31/M-72 in Traverse City.
Initial work will include activating temporary traffic signals, equipment delivery, and other preparatory work.
Beginning the evening of Sunday, March 10, weather permitting, contractors will begin removing pavement on US-31/M-72 (Front Street) between Garfield Avenue and Peninsula Drive, and on M-37 from US-31 to Peninsula Drive. This will require detours on city streets.
For the first two weeks of construction this season, work will require intermittent lane and shoulder closures.
The project is planned to be completed in two segments: Segment 1 (Garfield Avenue to Front Street) from March to July, and Segment 2 (Front Street to Division Street) from July to November, with a pause in work for the National Cherry Festival. Work during Segment 1 will require detours on city streets; work on Segment 2 will be completed part-width, with one lane open in each direction.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 10, (weather permitting) US-31/M-72 will be closed between Garfield Avenue and Peninsula Drive, as well as M-37 from US-31 to Peninsula Drive, and the two eastbound lanes of US-31 from Front Street to Peninsula Drive. Westbound traffic will be detoured on Eighth Street and Railroad Avenue; eastbound traffic will remain on US-31, then be detoured on Peninsula Drive, Eastern Avenue and Milliken Drive. Northbound and southbound M-37/Garfield Avenue traffic will be detoured on Eastern Avenue, Milliken Drive, Fair Street, and Eighth Street.
Commercial US-31 throughtraffi c will be detoured on 3 Mile Road and South Airport Road for the duration of the project.
In addition to rebuilding the roadway, this project will include replacing concrete curb and gutter, upgrading sidewalk and ramps, improving storm sewer, and repairing the Murchie Bridge over the Boardman River. The City of Traverse City also is investing $3.5 million to replace underground water and wastewater utilities as part of the contract with Elmer’s Crane and Dozer, Inc.
The estimated date of completion is November 2024.
