Inaugural Strongheart Boys Invitational set for March 9
The Inaugural Strongheart Boys Invitational, open to kids in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th, is set for Saturday, March 9 in Peshawbestown. Joe Symons, the event organizer and a teacher at Suttons Bay Public School, said he anticipates there will be around 70 plus students in the first Strongheart Center tournament.

LEELANAU HISTORY
A “historic structures report” might not sound as romantic as spending the night on a lighthouse that stands guard on a shoal in Good Harbor, but the two are closely related. The North Manitou Light Keepers, a nonprofit that owns and plans to rehab the lighthouse, received news this week that it will be receiving $40,000 to pay for the report.

Zoning changes asked for by Cherry Republic
Cherry Republic is preparing to expand its operational capacity in Empire as zoning laws are asked to be tweaked for storage expansion at a special meeting earlier this month. “We rent 15,000 to 20,000-square feet of not really good storage space,” Cherry Republic owner Bob Sutherland said.

Solar energy proposal garners controversy
The Leelanau County government center was subject to heated debate once again on Feb. 20. This time, the county commissioners were divided over a proposed grant application that would grant the county over $1.5 million to build out solar arrays on the center’s Suttons Bay campus, which is projected to save the county between $883,000 and $1.2 million in energy bills over 25 years.

Light voting favors front-runners
The Associated Press called the presidential primary race early last night after the polls closed, announcing that 46th President Joe Biden and 45th President Donald Trump won Michigan primaries. According to the unofficial election results posted on the Leelanau County website, about 35% of the registered voters in the county, 7,615 of 21,720 voters, turned out to vote.
