Venue needed for Leland event
The Leland Chamber of Commerce is seeking a place to call home for the annual Wine and Food Festival. Mark Morton, chamber president, approached the Leland Township Board Monday to talk about the 38th annual festival, scheduled this year for June 8.

Early voting for Primary starts Saturday
For the first time since the passage of a new voting rights act in 2022, Michigan residents will have the opportunity to cast their vote early and in person for nine consecutive days before the presidential primary election day, starting on Saturday, Feb. 17 and continuing through Sunday, Feb. 25.

Glen Lake students shine in second quarter
A total of 264 Glen Lake secondary students were listed on the honor roll for the second nine weeks of the 2023-24 school year. Those students receiving a 4.0 were: Seniors: Tyler Bixby, Tyler Brown, Ashley Croff, Dylan Cundiff, Raven Stevenson and Eleanor Valkner.

Glen Lake finalizes School of Choice policy
Glen Lake Board of Education approved (7-0) a district school of choice policy that will have open enrollment dates from May 6-22, 2024. A drafted policy for Glen Lake recommended that grade level enrollment be capped, starting at 16 students for Young 5’s; 60 students for kindergarten through second grade; 75 for students third through 12th grade.

Chili cookoff Saturday in G-A
Surprisingly enough, the snowmobile drag races were held as scheduled. It was a grass and mud mobile race, but it was surprisingly well attended.

In a quick turn of events, Village of Northport Council is now uncertain whom it will appoint as the at-large representative on the Northport/ Leelanau Township Utilities Authority (NLTUA). At a special meeting Feb. 1, council had arrived at an unofficial consensus regarding the planned appointment of Campbell McLeod to the position. *** No raise is warranted for a township clerk whose duties have largely been reassigned to her deputy. Such was the sentiment at Tuesday’s meeting of the Kasson Township Board — the first since a Feb. 1 special meeting during which duties of Clerk Traci Cruz were reassigned to her deputy. But it wasn’t fellow board members expressing frustration over the situation. It was a member of the audience.

Rural fire/rescue services challenged
In a medical emergency, people generally want whichever emergency service they call to get to the scene fast, but ambulances in rural areas face special challenges to help residents. The biggest obstacle for fire and rescue stations in rural areas is the distance between someone in need and the station.

No applicants for law enforcement positions
The formula that for decades has lined up applicants seeking to become Leelanau County deputies is out of whack. Neither young nor experienced people are applying.
