Trivia winners earn Caribbean cruise
A group of Omena residents returned recently from a weeklong Caribbean cruise that they won for placing second in the DJ Trivia District Championships last spring. Enjoying the cruise were Dan and Chrysti Duffiney, their daughter Emaleigh, Chrysti’s mother, Nancy Groesser, and family friend Joanne Brown.

LEELANAU HISTORY
Although Leelanau County Road Commission workers and staff are being credited for keeping roads in good condition this winter, elected members of the Road Commission appear to be getting off to a slippery start in 2019. At the commission’s regular meeting this week, Road Commission Chairman Bob Joyce accused a fellow commission member of “bullying and intimidating” the commission’s newly-appointed Superintendent/Manager Dave Priest. *** Students and staff at Leelanau County schools recently enjoyed an unplanned winter vacation thanks to Mother Nature. Northport Public School, Leland Public School, Glen Lake Schools and Suttons Bay Public Schools were all treated to six snow days in a seven-day period, beginning Friday, Jan. 25 and going through Monday. In between, students and staff were dragged back to school facilities for a lone day of school Friday, Feb. 1.

Inflatable planetarium shared by Park Service
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) now has an inflatable planetarium dome to enable immersive experiences related to the night sky, the Great Lakes ecosystem, and more. The dome was recently purchased as part of a grant from the National Park Foundation.

Trail plans spark debate, again
The battle for the final 4.2-mile “Segment 9” of the Heritage Trail within the Sleeping Bear Dunes is heating up again as plans are finalized and opposition is questioning the impact on the environment with roughly 7,300 trees’ fate in doubt, according to an assessment of the environmental impact by Borealis Consulting LLC in Traverse City.
