Roll back 2017 tax cuts
Roll back 2017 tax cuts
To the editor: I am no expert on tax policy, but I can read. Massive, permanent tax cuts in the last 25 years have caused a dramatic increase in the national debt by reducing the amount of money the government collects to conduct its business. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM

Biden faces trouble in reelection effort
“We’ve got trouble.” “Right here in River City.” “Trouble with a capital T.” “And that rhymes with B.” “And that stands for Biden.” With apologies to Meredith Wilson of Music Man fame, substitute White House for River City and you have a poignant description of the trouble the sitting president is having trying to nail down four more years. In Michigan the Donald, for the first time in years, has an eight-point lead which is well beyond the margin of error and about the only good thing the Biden camp can profess is that the election is not happening right now. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Charter retires, offers thanks
Charter retires, offers thanks
To the editor: A few members and supporters of Saving Birds Thru Habitat already know that I have retired from my position as Executive Director. As I make my announcement more broadly, I want to thank all of you who have provided generous financial support, office assistance and efforts for projects on the grounds. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

To the editor: Easy answers to complex problems invite unintended, often dangerous unforeseen consequences. Simple solutions are inappropriate for most social issues, which are complex, often ambiguous, and require nuanced consideration. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Shining light on January 6
Shining light on January 6
To the editor: For Christians, January 6th marks The Epiphany, when light pierced darkness revealing the Christ Child to the Gentiles. Every four years, our democracy shines its light through the peaceful transition of power. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Stable democracy threatened
Stable democracy threatened
To the editor: A new political party, No Labels, has emerged and has the potential to be a spoiler in the 2024 Presidential election. Their stratagem is a divisive and hazardous gambit jeopardizing America’s future. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

Respect … civility
Respect … civility
To the editor: These past few years have revealed turmoil in our county government in terms of direction and management. This past week, an outside consultant hired by the Board of Commissioners reported on his findings after talking with / hearing from 75% of the employees. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

New hope for assault weapon ban?
Efforts to ban assault weapons may have taken a turn for the better with the departure of the chief NRA opponent who successfully fought the ban for years but has now quietly resigned as the head of the progun lobby. Wayne LaPierre is charged with living high on the hog and allegedly using NRA funds to do it. With him out of the loop, what’s next on this gun battle? 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
To the editor: In his 12/28/23 letter to the editor, David Edelstein utilizes his observation that “guardrails” have been applied to free speech as justification for limits that should also be applied to our right to bear arms. I appreciate his comparison, which undermines his point. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Billions in foreign aid
Billions in foreign aid
To the editor: I have been pondering something for days. There are some mysteries in this country that continue to go unexplained, or we’re given an explanation that makes little or no sense to a common, critical thinking, middle class American like myself. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
