Henry graduated with distinction from medical school at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1972, and began his postgraduate studies at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, MN. He joined the staff as a consultant in Mayo’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in 1976 and retired in 2008 as Chair, Division of Immunopathology. He became a professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in 1987 and was honored as Teacher of the Year within Mayo’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology for his dedicated efforts to educate other clinical pathologists, fellows, residents, and students. During his 32 years of service at Mayo Clinic, Henry had an untiring commitment to improve laboratory immunology for the benefit of clinical colleagues and patients. He continued to serve after his retirement from Mayo Clinic by becoming the Medical Director of Phadia’s Immunology Reference Laboratory in Kalamazoo, MI.

Henry was known for his incisive intellect, refreshing wit, and for his unwavering loyalty to his family, friends, and the Detroit Tigers. He considered the practice of medicine to be a calling, not a career, and continued to use his considerable diagnostic and writing skills to improve the lives of others right up until the time of his death.

Henry is survived by his wife Annette, son Jay, daughter-in-law Lisa, and son Richard; grandchildren Hayden, Hudson, and Charles; cousins Lowell Homburger (Amy), Aaron Homburger, Allison Homburger, Margot Behrmann, and John Lawson.

Henry’s family would like to thank his physicians at Mayo Clinic and Munson Medical Center, especially, Drs. Tamim Rajjo and Jeffery Magnatta, for their excellent and compassionate care. Our thanks too, to the staff of Mayo Clinic’s ALS clinic and to Henry’s extended family- the congregation of People of Hope Church. We are deeply grateful for the support we received during Henry’s illness.

A celebration of Henry’s life will be held at People of Hope Church in Rochester, MN at 5 pm on Thursday, July 25, 2024, with his funeral service to follow at 7 pm.
