LAKE LEELANAU – Donna Joyce Mattson, 92, of Lake Leelanau, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at home with her family at her side.

Donna was born November 16, 1931 in Sault Ste. Marie the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Betrand Hazen Sr.

On December 8, 1951 in Sault Ste. Marie she married Glenn Mattson who preceded her in death in 2001.

Donna was born, raised a family and worked in Sault Ste. Marie. She spent 26 years at the Sault Ste. Marie Post Office and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Afterwards she and Glenn built, owned, and operated the Best Western Hotel also in Sault Ste. Marie. She loved her family and being at home. She also loved the beach, especially at the home she and Glenn built in Brimley.

Donna, Glenn and their in-laws, Jerry and Eleanor Mattson would form the 4 Musketeers to travel and vacation together. Their travels took them to Spain and the Bahamas. On one Caribbean trip she got seasick on the ship and chose to fly home, then found out via the news that the cruise ship caught on fire and sank.

Donna is survived by her two children, Bruce Mattson, Karol (Tim) Haring; eight grandchildren, Jodi (Andy) Wolfe, Jimmy Quigley, Kara (Pat) Witt, Sean (Crystal) Brabant, Cody (Traci) Dean, Craig (Kendra) Mattson, Jennifer ( Jim) Morgan and Stacie Mattson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Bertrand Hazen Jr., and a daughter, Karyn Mattson.

Cremation has taken place and burial will be held on Saturday, July 13 in the Oak Lawn Chapel Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie at 1:00 p.m.
