Died January 11, 2024

Lori with her beautiful smile and big heart died at home from complications of ALS with husband David holding her hand and dog Norman curled at her side.

Lori was born June 14, 1957 in Holland, Michigan to Henry and Lois Holstege. She was second of five children and grew up in the Greater Grand Rapids area. She graduated from Calvin College in 1979 and from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1983.

Having received her MD degree, Lori returned to Grand Rapids and began an internal medicine residency at Butterworth Hospital (now Corewell Health). On her first month rotation she worked closely with a young British doctor named David Quimby. Sparks flew and they married a year later in 1984. Together over 40 years and inseparable, the sparks never stopped flying.

Having finished their training in Grand Rapids, Lori and David moved to the Greater Detroit area. Lori continued her training in psychiatry at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. David completed a pulmonary fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 1989, having finally finished all their training, they returned to the Greater Grand Rapids area to begin their careers.

Lori wore many hats during her career including: Teaching medical students and residents as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan State University;, Served as Vice Chair, Board of Directors, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services;, Worked as consulting psychiatrist for the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Clinic, YWCA of Grand Rapids;, Served as Councilor for the Michigan Psychiatric Society;, Was a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association;, Served as Medical Director, Kent Oaks Psychiatric Hospital Grand Rapids., Throughout all of this, Lori maintained a busy private practice, and said that caring for her patients was a privilege.

In addition to falling in love with each other in 1983, Lori and David fell in love with Leelanau County. Over the following decades, they explored the countryside and waterways all seasons of the year. Finally in 2000 they built their own home in Leelanau County and in 2011 moved there permanently. Besides continuing to work, Lori spent her days hiking the many trails and byways of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, usually accompanied by her husband and dogs. She also loved gardening, cooking, hosting friends and family, books, music, art and travel.

Lori is survived by her husband, David Quimby, MD, her beloved dog, Norman, her parents, Henry and Lois Holstege, her siblings: Holly (Peter) DeVries, Marc Holstege, Todd (Kim) Holstege, and Christopher (Angela) Holstege. In addition, she is survived by 16 wonderful nephews and nieces and their equally wonderful spouses, as well as her beautiful “greats” (great nephews and nieces) who always brought her joy.
